Make Tucson, AZ a Sanctuary City
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
On Friday, January 20th, 2017 Donald Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States. His plans for his first 100 days includes ending DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, building a wall on the border with Mexico, further criminalizing the undocumented, and cutting off Federal funds to sanctuary cities. We will not stand by and watch our brothers and sisters continue to be criminalized and persecuted.
Particularly here in the city of Tucson, the immigrant rights movement has an admirable history of struggle against internally repressive policies and programs. We continue to resist the unpopular and racist SB1070 law, which brought about local police and Border Patrol collaboration and contributed to the process of criminalizing immigrants. At the same time, we continue to firmly oppose federal immigration programs such as Operation Streamline, which continues to incarcerate en masse and without due process undocumented immigrants.
In December 2005, the Republican House of Representatives passed HR4437, known as the Sensenbrenner bill. In response, massive protests centered in the Chicano, Mexicano, and Latino communities throughout the country brought more than a million people into the streets in 2006. This mass resistance halted the Sensenbrenner bill. We feel that a similar mass movement is needed to stop Trump’s attacks on our communities.
Therefore, local immigrant rights action committee L.U.P.E is calling on all progressive students, unions, organizations and community groups who fight for social justice and equality, to sign this petition and also join us on January 20th 2017, National Day of Protest for Immigrants Rights, to rally and march to the Mayor’s office, where we will deliver a letter demanding the city takes concrete legal measures to defend our immigrant community.
The City of Tucson has already declared itself an immigrant friendly city, let it now reaffirm this commitment by standing up against hate and oppression and declaring itself a Sanctuary City.
Legalization not Deportation!
No Mexico/US Wall!
