Change the Internal Affairs process

Internal Affairs investigations need to be conducted by a neutral party. Having the police investigate their own is not working in many cities. Especially small cities where they all protect each other. The police need to be held accountable for their mistakes , and all too often the system breaks down.

Example:

Our family is dealing with a police officer ( local police union president) who made false accusations in an email that severely impacted our mentally incapacitated son. The investigator was the local union secretary.....

Even after we proved the false claims ; the officer was exonerated. The investigation found it to be an honest mistake. Police are not above the law , and their mistakes must be dealt with. We all need to know we are protected from being falsely accused. Policy needs to be made to have outside entities investigate police mistakes. Punishment should equal what would have happened to the individual being falsely accused. Only then will we have police officers doing proper indentifications and investigations. Especially when we are dealing with those who cannot defend themselves.

Every agency has said to get a lawyer and sue the city. We all need to be able to go to an agency , or neutral entity to right the wrongs done by police. We should not have to go to court to make sure the honorable thing is done.
