The citizens of Yorba Linda and surrounding communities call on the City of Yorba Linda to implement existing policy discretion and refuse the divisive, potentially dangerous, and certainly negative appearance of controversial, former law former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio - who is scheduled to make an appearance in Yorba Linda at the city's general fund-subsidized community center on Friday May 25th at 5pm for a rally in support of congressional candidate Philip Liberatore.
Joe Arpaio has been the subject of several federal civil rights lawsuits including "immigration round-ups", found to have unfairly targeted Hispanics in conducting traffic stops, and detained "persons for further investigation without reasonable suspicion that a crime has been or is being committed." He arrested a six-year-old during an immigration sweep and opposed adequate care for minors, and claimed Mexican border-crossers were infected with swine flu. Arpaio ordered the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) to dress up 220 Latino immigrants in prison stripes and forced them to march through the streets from the county jail to a “Tent City” detainment camp. The immigrant detainees had been picked up for non-violent offenses, but the Tent City camp was set up like a maximum prison facility with electric fences.
Arapaio's appearances regularly draw aggressive, confrontational individuals and have already triggered a number of planned counter demonstrations by groups from Yorba Linda as well as any number of other groups that fervently oppose law enforcement profiling and anti-immigration rhetoric. This is what failure of the City to apply its discretion policy has the potential to incite.
This is not the type of individual the City of Yorba Linda should be enabling as a guest in city facilities, particularly in light of the City Council's recent decision to join with the anti-immigrant "IRLI" in it's lawsuit against California sanctuary laws. Joe Arpaio hired the IRLI's former attorney Kris Kobach who drafted SB1070 to train his deputies in immigration enforcement.
Now is the time for the City of Yorba Linda to demonstrate leadership and reject divisive actions that can appear to condone bigotry. None of us want to be known as "that place". We call on all citizens to choose a united community that stands for decency and justice. Please reconsider and apply discretionary leadership in the interest of a united Yorba Linda!
