The year 2020 has been a rough year for everyone. While being a resident in the city of LaPorte, one thing that has become clear to me through social media, personal discussions and friendly conversations is that the use of fireworks, during both allowed and illegal timelines, has become a burden upon many LaPortians.

Beginning shortly after Memorial Day, the barrage of fireworks that have been operated in the city of LaPorte has been outrageous. Many people do not understand, but I feel a majority do understand the negative effect fireworks can have on our veterans, pets, elderly and those dealing with mental health issues. There is no reason anyone should be setting off fireworks well into the night weeks before the 4th of July.

The mention of the 4th of July brings me to my next point- the timeline of "allowable" firework discharges within city limits. There is no reason that fireworks should be able to be discharged in the city of LaPorte for a span of 11 days in celebration of one day. Most people still have jobs and obligations to tend to and cannot be kept up until 11pm-12am (even though many times people go later), especially on week nights. I propose that this timeline be shortened to the weekend before the 4th of July, July 3rd and July 4th. I find it unnecessary that one should be allowed to set off fireworks within city limits after the 4th of July has passed.

I would also like more enforcement of this ordinance. While I understand it's difficult to sometimes pinpoint where the deafening booms, bangs and pops are coming from, those that are caught breaking the law should be ticketed.

I would like to bring peace to our veterans, pets, children, elderly and others that are exhausted from being kept up into the late evenings.
