Raise The Minimum Wage in Tuscaloosa To $10.10

Tuscaloosa $10.10 Minimum Wage Coalition started this petition to City Council of Tuscaloosa Sonya McKinstry (City Council of Tuscaloosa) and

In 1968 the minimum wage was $1.60. It had the buying power of $10.90 today. Yet, today people are expected to live on $7.25 an hour!

Low wage workers in Tuscaloosa are suffering!! A single parent with two children making a $7.25 wage is $4,500 below the poverty line. She is required to seek help such as food stamps and other public assistance to simply survive, even though she is working full time. 25% of low wage workers are parents without paid sick leave; missing work means no pay; 60% of low wage workers are women. It is unethical and immoral to keep hard working people in such dire circumstances.

With this petition, the Tuscaloosa $10.10 Minimum Wage Coalition is requesting a public hearing before the City Council of Tuscaloosa to propose the establishment of a $10.10 minimum wage.

What would happen if we raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour?

  • 17,000 employees in Tuscaloosa would rise above the poverty line with a $10.10 minimum wage.
  • Workers would be able to afford health insurance.
  • Workers would no longer need public assistance such as food stamps, food pantries, etc. to feed their families
  • Tuscaloosans would spend the extra income locally, spurring job growth and benefiting local economies.
  • Tuscaloosa would join the thriving communities with minimum wage over $10.00 an hour.

Some worry that a raise in the minimum wage would kill local jobs and encourage businesses to go elsewhere, but the facts are:

OUR GOALS:

  1. Raise the minimum wage to $8.50 in 2016--most businesses already pay this amount.
  2. Raise to $10.10 in January 2017.
  3. Annual Cost of Living Increases every January.

If you believe hard working citizens of Tuscaloosa deserve a living wage, please make your voice heard by signing this petition. To join the Tuscaloosa $10.10 Minimum Wage Coalition and fight for the rights of hard working Tuscaloosans, please contact Doug Hoffman or Jim Price.
