City Council of Columbia, South Carolina : Suspend Your Mean-Spirited Plan that Criminalizes Homelessness

This petition made change with 159 supporters!

On August 14th, the City Council unanimously approved a plan that would evict homeless people from the downtown area and require them to stay at a police-guarded shelter on the edge of town. Residents of the shelter would not be allowed to leave, except by escort for approved appointments. Those who refused to go to the shelter would be arrested for vagrancy laws. The Council plans to dedicate a hotline for community and business response when a homeless person is identified. City Council Member Cameron Runyan has proposed that Columbia's homeless community either stay at the shelter, go to jail, or leave the city all together. This cruel and unconstitutional strategy punishes poor people for being poor. It must be suspended immediately.
