Lift the Pit Bull Ban in Maquoketa!

This petition had 1,878 supporters

Maquoketa enforces a pit bull ban. A ban that is supposed to keep Maquoketa safe, but only seems to discriminate against the common dog breed of pit bulls. This ban not only discriminates against pit bulls with no prior incidents, but it also lacks in its original purpose of keeping Maquoketa safe. The enforcement of the ban has been pushed to the side, allowing for people to sneak in pit bulls by misidentifying them on purpose, or not registering them in the first place. The problem with this is that we don’t know if the dog has good or bad temperament or how powerful the dog actually is. While the ban may protect against the pit bulls who do cause harm, it leaves out the others who don’t. There are many pit bulls who are loving and loyal, and could make great family additions, however their chance has been taken away from them due to a pit bull ban. Instead of banning the breed overall, the city council should lift the ban, but replace it with mandatory obedience training of pit bulls, and increased owner responsibility to ensure safety for the citizens of Maquoketa. By signing this petition, you are helping to spark a conversation between the citizens and the city council about the unfair discrimination of pit bulls.
