Change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day in NYC

In such a beautifully diverse city which continues to grow and develop, it is vital that we remove any negative and oppressive reminders of our past. Just as our brothers and sisters in Los Angeles and several other states have already done, we need to take the next imperative step to celebrate the appropriate first people.

The current "holiday" is a reminder of the horrible acts that were committed against the indigenous people of this country. Instead of edifying those responsible, we should use this calendar day to commemorate, honor and show empathy for the thousands of lives that were taken by "heroes", who came to America. This will send a clear message to millions more people, that New York City supports change and growth. Above all, we are a city that continues to heal from the past and progress forward.
