Cat Boss started this petition to City Manager Grand Blanc City Council

Currently residents of Grand Blanc cannot keep any animals other than cats, dogs, and songbirds.  This ordinance was written in 1987 and does not reflect the changing of the times.  Many things have changed since '87, not the least of which is the interest in sustainable living.  Keeping a small flock of backyard chickens is a way for families to have some control over where their food is coming from.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, the desire to know where our food is coming from is even stronger and more important.  The supply chains have been disrupted and for those who wish to put in the effort, providing for their family should be their right.

Grand Blanc is a wonderful community but has fallen behind the nation and our neighbors in this respect.  Other local communities including Fenton, Davison, Holly, Linden, Flushing, Clarkston, and Ann Arbor allow the keeping of hens for personal enjoyment and egg production.

Did you know that in the top housing markets in the nation, each and every one allow backyard chickens?  Many believe that chickens will lower property values but the facts show that property values go up with the adoption of backyard chicken ordinances.

Did you know that when well kept (in other words, not a commercial farm) a small flock of chickens produce less waste than an average dog? And therefore less smell as well.

Did you know that even roosters, feared for sound complaints, are actually no louder than a lawn mower or barking dog?

We, the undersigned, support that adoption of an ordinance allowing those who wish to keep 4-6 hens, humanely and responsibly, within the City of Grand Blanc, the freedom to do so for family use.  We understand that certain areas within the City of Grand Blanc may not be free to keep chickens depending on the restrictions of Home Owners Associations.
