Dear City College of San Francisco administrators and community members,

The students in the City College of San Francisco Department of Journalism have asked the The City College of San Francisco Department of Journalism Advisory Board what they could do about the class and instructor cuts and lack of appropriate resources that have affected our department. The Board responded suggesting the students write a motion to request reinstatement of classes and instructors.

We as students in the department are concerned by the department’s uncertain future as it endures continued budget cuts and faces the real possibility of closure.

The students believe the City College of San Francisco Department of Journalism remains the most affordable and high quality media training program available to the general public. Yet year after year its dedicated faculty has not received adequate funding for existing operations much less expansion despite ample evidence of high levels of student achievement.

The students of the department urge the college administration to recognize the Department of Journalism as an indispensable source of value to the practice of journalism and adjacent industries in an era of fake news and propaganda.

Furthermore, the students of the department strongly request that the administration immediately safeguard the Department of Journalism and speedily remove it from the list of programs under review for elimination.

For the sake of our education and the future of the Bay Area media community, we believe the college must reestablish courses that were eliminated for Spring 2020; provide long-term resources for the department’s growth; better promote course offerings especially over summer and winter break; provide secretarial services and Apple computer lab technical support; expedite budgetary assistance to swiftly modernize curriculum in response to the job market; and commit to offering a tenure-track replacement for Professor Gonzales upon his retirement.

Together we can build upon the Department of Journalism’s strong reputation and preserve its history of excellence for the future.

Sincerely,

Concerned students of the department of journalism.
