Campaign Update: CAA Approves Concentrated Flight Paths - Our Next Steps
Dec 20, 2015 — The CAA has recently approved City Airport’s proposal to concentrate flight paths. This is despite the flawed consultation process that caused outrage from local residents. Our campaign was supported by many locals, including local councils and MPs with a large amount of objections letters arriving at the CAA.
Response from HACAN East is below:
“The decision follows uproar at the lack of consultation on the proposals last year. City Airport just put a technical document on its website and inform the Consultative Committee. It was left to HACAN East to hold public meetings in the areas which would be affected. The airport argued that, because the change was largely replicating what was already happening, it was only required by the CAA to carry out a minimal consultation.
Local people, backed by many local authorities, MPs and members of the Greater London Authority, said that a full consultation should have been carried out as some areas would get 30% more planes than they do at present. The CAA was inundated with letters calling for a fresh consultation. The announcement means that the CAA has ruled out a new consultation.
HACAN East chair John Stewart said, “Many people will be in utter despair of the decision. It means that residents who were hardly overflown at all by planes from London City a few years back face the prospect of living under a concentrated flight path for the rest of their lives. It is a terrible prospect.”
The decision has already had coverage in the local newspapers
• Wanstead and Woodford Guardian
• Waltham Forest Guardian
• Newham Recorder
• Ilford Recorder
• Romford and Havering Post
And no doubt in many others.
Whilst we wait on further details from the CAA we recommend you write in to your local paper/MP to ensure this issue cannot be brushed under the carpet and the pressure is kept on councillors and MPs. The supporters of this campaign have been very successful in providing the necessary publicity throughout the campaign and we’re confident with your support we are still able to influence this decision.
To assist you in this we have a template letter for you to modify as you see fit:
I am writing to express my disdain at the recent decision by the Civil Aviation Authority to go ahead with new flight paths for planes out of City Airport from next year. I'm angry that my home and the area around it will become a noise ghetto with all the additional planes that myself and others in [add place] are going to be subject to, especially as City Airport made minimal effort to consult residents affected by their plans.
Please could I ask that you support us residents in opposing this undemocratic action, which would not only affect my quality of life, but that of any others across east London.
