Why this petition matters

Dear Mayor Don McLeod,

We are Severance.

While our Census in 2010 showed us at 3,165 citizens, this year’s count will be so much higher. However, even with all the growth we’ve seen in the last year, we are still a “small town.” We are Bruce’s. We are our 126 year old post office. We are one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school that just opened this year. Our Facebook page sums us up: “While still a small town with the feel of an agricultural community, the Town of Severance held the distinction of being the fastest growing community in Northern Colorado for several years.”  We just recently acquired our own police department, and in the epitome of the “small town” feeling, the SPD had our town’s children design the paint jobs on their patrol cars. We see our SPD officers in our schools, at community events, and in our neighborhoods, and they are honest, kind, respectful, and just. We are blessed to have the SPD keeping our town safe.

We are Severance. We are small, but we can still be mighty. Mayor McLeod, we ask you to take the Mayors’ Pledge to Take Action Now by the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance found at https://www.obama.org/ Help our small town be a leader in Northern Colorado against systemic racism and the kind of police violence our country is currently protesting.

We are Severance. It’s our Centennial Year. What better time to make our pledge and let the world see that we “recognize the humanity and dignity of every person.”
