Bruce Bassett started this petition to Citizens of Mercer Island

Communities thrive when citizens engage in public conversations that are honest, civil and robust.

Responsibility for guiding and maintaining these standards lies with all community members.

As a member of my Mercer Island community, I recognize that I share this responsibility to encourage civil discourse and discourage incivility.

And so I pledge as follows:

  1. In all public forums, I will treat others with respect. I may disagree with an idea but will not be disrespectful of the speaker. I will avoid bullying, incivility and misstatements that discourage respectful discourse.
  2. Recognizing that Nextdoor has emerged as a uniquely impactful community forum with well-defined rules of permitted behavior, I will review and adhere to the Nextdoor ‘Community Guidelines’ when I post. (See below.)
  3. Moreover, I will adopt a ‘See something, Say something.’ commitment to flagging posts that fail to live up to Nextdoor’s ‘Community Guidelines’.

Nextdoor ‘Community Guidelines’ Summary

• Nextdoor’s Summary: “Everyone here is your neighbor.  Please treat each other with respect.”

• Be helpful, not hurtful: “The heart and soul of Nextdoor are the helpful conversations that happen between neighbors. When conversations turn disagreeable, everyone on Nextdoor suffers. Our Guidelines prohibit posts and replies that discriminate against, attack, insult, shame, bully, or belittle others.”
