The air quality of Kolkata and neighbouring areas has been steadily deteriorating over the last few years. Air pollution has been sharply rising and breaching hazardous levels of pm 2.5(toxic air particle known to trigger or worsen chronic disease such as asthma, heart attack, bronchitis and other respiratory problems). The 400 AQI barrier that signifies severe levels of pollution that can seriously affect even healthy adults with only minutes of exposure is being breached on a daily basis. Children and elders with respiratory illnesses and heart conditions are especially vulnerable. The sheer apathy of the administration and pollution control board is shocking. What is even more alarming is the deafening silence of the citizens of Kolkata and other affected areas. Clean breathable air is a fundamental right of every citizen of our beloved city and it's time we raised our collective voice in demanding the same.
