Jamie Leal started this petition to Kern county planning and natural resources department citizens of Boron

Solar energy theoretically seems to be a better way to use our sun's resources and produce energy. While certain aspects of the proposed Aratina Solar Project sound positive there are a lot more negative effects it can have on our community and possibly our health. At this time the official environmental impact report has not been completed. You can research the impacts of other solar fields to see the impact it has had on other communities. Keep in mind we also do not gain from this project as the energy produced will be used in other areas, not in Kern County.

Visually these will be an eye sore on the entire community as it will surround the entirety of our towns desert. The scenic beauty in our area has been used in multiple media purposes. i.e. commercials, music videos, movies. Our surroundings alter our mental health. Instead of seeing beautiful mountain sunsets and moonscapes we will see hundreds of solar panels that will take up the entirety of our town. Taking walks, photography, desert sports will all be affected and possibly have to cease as there will be no location not covered in solar panels. Growth will cease because the solar farm will take up a large percentage of land in Boron plus surrounding land is going to be labeled as agricultural which could mean more solar farms. We cannot build homes or businesses on agricultural land.

There will also be environmental changes to our air quality, toxins, climate. This will impact wildlife habitats and possibly destroy all wild life in the area. Desert tortoises will be displaced. Vast amounts of birds die from their wings being melted or burned off by heat from the solar farm’s mirrors. Burrowing owls in California’s Mojave Desert rely on burrows dug by desert tortoises for shelter. The area also becomes less livable to plants and trees as the solar farms damage and disturb agriculture. The proposed plan can also put a strain on already sensitive local water resources. In the United States, electricity production accounts for more than 40 percent of all daily freshwater withdrawals. Our water resources are already very limited for the community.

Please sign this petition so we, as a community, can object to big solar ruining our agriculture, wild life, scenic views, environment and our peace of mind. Save our desert from being overrun by big corporations and their financial ability to negatively impact our community, our land.
