Representative Jesse L. James says:

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Stanley Police Department to talk about what they are dealing with in and around the community. We also had a chance to talk about their K9 Unit and the importance of having one.

Chief Weiland and K9 handler Tyler Lewien spoke to me about what it took to get a K9 and how beneficial it has been for their department. I think a highlight of our meeting was that they made an investment to have a K9 Unit to keep their community safe. The only way they could afford their K9 was from generous donations from locals. It was very heartwarming to hear about all of the support they have received from their community and neighboring ones. The best part of the K9 Unit is that they take Trey, the K9, to local schools and educate kids about what the dog and officer do and talk about the drug epidemic and what the consequences of it are.

I think now more than ever it is so important to be talking to young people about the dangers of doing drugs. We must all do our part to educate people about addiction and the ways it can tear our communities apart. I am very proud of the officers at the Stanley Police Department for being so forward thinking and investing in their community.

With a “Dual Purpose K-9” that can also function in Search and Rescue, we can help save lives. It is said that a single dog can be as effective as up to 30 trained human searchers. Having a search and rescue dog on your team not only saves time and money — it saves lives.

•SEARCH & RESCUE K9
•Armed with a keen sense of smell, heightened hearing, exceptional sight, and virtually unending stamina, dogs play an integral role in all search and rescue efforts. Specially trained canines have the ability to act as an invaluable asset in criminal investigations, natural disasters, and missing person cases. Their help drastically reduces search times, increasing the chances that the lost or missing will be found alive.
