With a population of 49.67 million, Andhra Pradesh has a large population that depends on community toilets. Country statistics state that residents of nearly 59.4 per cent of the country’s rural homes defecate in the open. To add to that, Andhra Pradesh is mainly an agricultural state where 70% of population lives in rural areas. There is major need for safe sanitation practices in the state.
A survey conducted by the ‘Centre for World Solidarity’ found that toilets meant for girls are not being constructed according to the norms prescribed. Only 4% (39 out of 948) schools have rest rooms available for girls. The absence of usable toilets has been linked to the shockingly large percentage (62%) of girls who reported going home to dispose of and change sanitary napkins during school hours.
Education is the most important factor for the progress of a country. Join the movement, sign the petition to install toilets and promote education!
