5 out of the 30 districts in Karnataka are declared as being free from open defecation.

Only 4.7% gram panchayats of Karnataka were open defecation free in 2015. Where the urban cities enjoy access to toilets, it is the rural population that struggles when it comes to sanitation. And though many households may have toilets, open defecation is still prevalent in rural Karnataka due to lack of awareness. The attitude of the people needs to be changed – they need to be educated about building toilets in houses and avoiding usage of shared toilets.
Besides shortage of space and money, water shortage adds up to another major reason for lack of successful sanitation in several areas.
The Karnataka government aims to achieve the target of 40 lakh toilets by 2019 under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Let’s support this initiative of the Karnataka government and sign this petition so that they have the necessary push required to build a open defecation free Karnataka!
