Bring an Affordable Grocery Store to Sharpsburg

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated the borough of Sharpsburg as food desert. We want to bring an affordable, convenient grocery store to our community!
This petition will show the Sharpsburg Council and potential grocery store companies that a grocery store is both wanted and needed in the borough. We ask that Sharpsburg residents and non-residents sign this petition to show that they will shop at an affordable grocery store in Sharpsburg! Please indicate if you are a resident or non-resident when you sign.
Circles Sharpsburg was founded last year to address employment, transportation and child care issues that might hinder progress toward financial stability for some residents. Sharpsburg Councilman Matt Rudzki explains, “Sharpsburg suffers from a lack of easily accessible, affordable and healthy food.”
Although The Waterworks — a shopping center that has a Giant Eagle Market District grocery store and a Wal-Mart — is only a couple miles away and accessible by bus, that option may not be affordable for everyone. The cost, round-trip is $5.00, if you have a PATransit Connect Card. Also, the closest Aldi is located on Rt. 8 in Shaler, but is not easily accessible by bus, with the nearest bus stop being 1 mile away. If residents lack access to a car, these stores are difficult to reach.
About 30 percent of borough residents are at poverty-level and rely on food stamps. In addition, from a public health standpoint, having access to fresh fruits, vegetables and grains should help curtail obesity and promote healthy living. In turn, that reduces health care costs and encourages growth and stability in a community.
