The graveyard holds the remains of many local people who have living relatives still visiting.

The Chuch in my own area where my sisters were married has been turned into a private home and the graveyard around it has just vanished, now being used as the owners cat park.

The trustees are missing a trick here. The church is entwined into the community, and that link is not something you can just 'buy', or 'manufacture'. If money is your only motivation - understand the huge value of something that 'they don't make any more', and work with that. Thats of course if you cannot see that selling this on as a piece of real estate is intrinsically 'not right'.

History is important ..to go forward you must appreciate the past.
