Secretary Hagel, I urge you to take swift personal action to ensure that retired military working dog Matty is reunited with his partner, injured soldier Spc. Brent Grommet, for permanent adoption.

Multiple credible news articles and VFW Talk Radio report that the Army refused to allow Spc. Brent Grommet to adopt his retired military working dog partner, Matty, after both returned from Afghanistan after being injured by IEDs. This is reported to have occurred despite the federal statute known as "Robby's Law," which is intended to give military working dog handlers first priority in adopting a retired dog. News reports state that the Army gave Matty to someone else, perhaps because of a personal relationship between an Army official and the adopter. Spc. Grommet's father states that Spc. Grommet needs to be reunited with Matty for his healing and wellbeing.
Please ask Defense Secretary Hagel to personally take action and do what it takes to reunite Spc. Grommet with Matty and to ensure that this does not happen again to any other soldiers seeking to adopt their military working dog partner.
