On May 26th, 2017, the soon-to-be senior class of 2018 learned that one of their fellow classmates had died unexpectedly. Just under a year ago, Tommy-Ray Hutchins took his own life, and the students’ grief was deafening. He was going to be a graduating senior with an international baccalaureate degree this year at Campus High School. Despite being asked multiple times, school administrators are refusing to recognize and memorialize him at graduation. When asked, the school only stated that they believe that they have already provided resources for grief counseling for the students and simply avoided any further question. That statement simply isn’t true. There was no public counseling, no announcements, no way for students to grieve. We are not asking for publicity, or to detract from the celebration of these graduating seniors, we are only asking for respect and closure. This link is for a petition for the school to recognize Tommy at graduation and remember his life instead of brushing it off like he never mattered.
