Dear Centennial Music families and friends,

We can make this happen with your support before the deadline of October 30!

Please read on...

Mrs. Hafets and Mrs. Scaltz are submitting Mr. David Matchim as a nominee for a 2017 Howard County Arts Council, Outstanding Arts Educator, "HOWIE" award.  It is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to arts education in Howard County. Mr. Matchim is not aware of this nomination (yet!), so we respectfully request that you refrain from sharing any aspect of this with him.

Mr. Matchim received a bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a master's degree in music education from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. In 2010, he was one of twelve Peabody graduates to be nominated, elected, and inducted into the National Music Honor Society Pi Kappa Lambda, Epsilon Omicron Chapter, thereby recognizing outstanding achievement in scholarship, musicianship, collegiality, and service to the Peabody community. He served as adjunct faculty for the Peabody Music Education Department from 2010 to 2013 and is an alumnus of the Aspen Music Festival and Yale School of Music's Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

Mr. Matchim has brought his expertise in music and gifts as an educator to Howard County.  He was appointed Director of Bands at Centennial High School in Fall 2011.  During his tenure, he has positively impacted the lives of thousands of students, many of whom have pursued careers as musicians and educators.

Mr. Matchim currently directs five ensembles (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, Marching Band and Jazz Band) at Centennial High School.  The program currently has approximately 400 students and is the largest in the county.  All of the bands received a superior rating at adjudications last year; the Jazz Band placed fourth at the Berklee Jazz Festival; and he is the host of the Howard County Marching Band festival.

Mr. Matchim was the 2016 Howard County Music Educator of the Year.  Under his direction, the Centennial High School Bands have earned high praise at local, state, and national festivals and competitions.
