More Appropriate Training, Education and Better Use Body Cameras for Canadian Police
Why this petition matters
To become a police officer in Canada the current minimum requirements are to:
- Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age
- Have successfully completed at least 4 years of secondary school
- Not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted
- Be a fully licenced driver and meet the requirements of the Graduated Licence system in the province of Ontario, having accumulated no more than 6 demerit points.
- Meet the vision standards which include: colour, peripheral and depth perception requirements, and have uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40, and best-corrected acuity of 20/30 with both eyes open (binocularly).
- Be physically able to perform the duties of the position, with regard to personal safety and the safety of the public.
- Must have Standard First Aid and Level C C.P.R. training.
- Be of good moral character and habits.
- Volunteer a minimum of 150 hours per year
- Reside in the Greater Toronto Area (Durham, Peel, York, Toronto)
- Complete all ongoing training as required
- Commit to the post-secondary training program for a period of one year
Although all of these requirements offer the first step to beginning a career in law enforcement, after decades of ineffective police practices, it is clear that the list of requirements should be extended. Like many professional careers, police services are essential to the functioning of a secure society. Bearing in mind the degree of responsibility held by police officers, and considering the amount of power that they have, it seems that their training and evaluation are insufficient.
I submit this petition with the following requests:
- The implementation of a more effective way of ensuring that all body cameras for all Canadian police officers are active at all times
- As part of the police curricular in training, to study subjects of; psychology, sociology, history, race relations, anti-oppression, ethics and law.
- Commit to a program for a period of 3-4 years following the completion of secondary school
- The minimum age should be raised to 23 to become a licenced police officer to allow for maturation of judgement
- A more strict background check
- Removal of police licence immediately following any form of misconduct or discrimination
- To hire a more diverse police force who understand the struggles of minorities
These advancements to the police service training allow for a greater understanding of the true role and responsibilities of police who are meant to serve and protect citizens.
The goal of this petition is to reach a specific number of signatures so that it can be presented to the government as a valid issue. The baseline for signatures according to parliament is 100,000 in order for this petition to be reviewed by the municipal and federal governments. This is an issue that is in desperate need of addressing. By signing and sharing this petition, you are helping to rectify a government system that is designed to target and oppress minorities. The amount of power that police hold is completely disproportionate to the training that they receive to acquire this power. While this petition can not immediately fix every issue that we as a community advocate for, your support in this matter is a first step that can make a dramatic impact on the future of our police system.
