Why this petition matters

Teens naturally sleep later because of how their bodies produce melatonin, so making them wake up as early as 5:00 a.m. to get ready for school causes many students to become sleep deprived considering one-third of adolescents in the U.S. do not get the recommended level of sleep for their age. Having a later start time in schools affects students as there is an increase of 60% of students who get the amount of sleep they need of eight hours. As students get more sleep, their risk of getting short-term or long-term consequences from a lack of sleep lowers significantly because they can receive the minimum amount of sleep that their bodies need. In addition to the positive effects on students’ health, many things are influenced by the number of sleep students receive such as a decline in motor vehicle accidents, tardiness, better attendance at school, participation, and academic success overall. Having an extra hour or two in the morning can do a lot of good for students, especially high school students since, at this age, their bodies desperately need the extra time of sleep because the majority of them do not get enough rest. Although there are cons to changing the start times of high schools including financial implications and effects on extracurricular activities, starting class later would benefit students by improving academic performance, safety, and students’ overall health; therefore, high schools should have start times of 8:30 a.m. or later. If the school districts in America truly prioritize the prolonged wellbeing of their students at their peak times, it is ethically necessary to push back the start times.
