marta johnson started this petition to Jim Saalfield

On September 27th the Kent County Commission Chair Jim Saalfied implemented a new policy without consultation or approval of the whole board. Under the new policy, members of the public cannot attend meetings of the commission within the chambers, and are instead directed to a nearby room to view the proceedings on a closed-circuit television. Individuals are only allowed to enter the commission chambers one at a time if they wish to give public comment. Kent County Sheriff Deputies were outside the commission chambers to enforce the policy and escorted individuals hoping to give public comment back and forth between rooms.

In response Kent County residents have filed an official complaint asking Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker to force Chair Saalfeld to follow the Open Meetings Act. Because Prosecutor Becker works closely with the commission and depends on them for a budget, he will not pursue because of a conflict of interest.

We are asking fellow residents to add their name to this complaint in support of filing this in the 17th Circuit Court to compel Chairman Saalfield to change this policy.

In these divisive times we can not abandon our commitment to the democratic process and an open government. We may disagree on issues and tactics, but we should all be welcome to the table and be able to participate in our democracy.

As a community, we urge Chairman Saalfield to reverse his policy of preemptively barring the public from accessing Kent County Commission meetings and no longer require individuals to identify themselves in order to be eligible to address the commission.

We also urge you to attend the next meeting of the Kent County Commission on Thursday, October 11th, at 6:00 pm on the third floor of the County Building on Calder Plaza.
