The situation regarding the outbreak of Covid at the Saskatchewan Correctional Center is now a serious crisis.  There now are over 100 cases of Covid at this institution, or approximately TWENTY PER CENT of the inmate population. This is an unacceptable, desperate, and inhumane situation.  Conditions at the institution have been described as appalling: inadequate cleaning and hygiene products, overcrowding, prisoners sleeping on the floor, and dismissive attitudes on the part of the guards.  The situation in "the Hole" is even worse, with blood and feces on the floor, no soap, no access to exercise or fresh air, no changes of clothing.  Prisoners contacted the Saskatchewan Minister of Justice, Christine Tell, with their concerns over a month ago and have received no response.  They are requesting the immediate release of vulnerable prisoners - the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.  Saskatchewan families have the right to be assured that their incarcerated loved ones are not in peril of  becoming ill or dying because of prison conditions and lack of action on the part of our government.  Because the majority of inmates are Indigenous, this becomes an issue of systemic racism as well as of human rights violations.  Prisoners do have the human right to humane treatment and it is UNACCEPTABLE that the present dangerous situation exists.  Please act now to pressure our government to take remedial action.
