Volunteers Protest Lack of Shelter Beds and Affordable Housing in Toronto

Volunteers at Out of the Cold- Eastminster UC on the Danforth in Toronto have been asked to extend their season until the end of April. The city is relying on the good will and generosity of volunteers like us to solve a crisis that was created by a failure of government to act in a timely and responsible manner.
We have volunteered a significant number of hours already over the last several months and are both frustrated by the request to extend this commitment and at the same time very concerned for those in need at the end of March given the current shelter crisis in Toronto.
We feel the city is no longer living up to its end of solving the problem and is taking advantage of the good will of OOTC volunteers to address a crisis that could have been avoided through planning and swifter responses.
We want to send a strong message that offloading to community service groups is not a permanent solution or a way for the city to address the current shelter crisis. While the proposed solutions include lobbying other government agencies for support, the city must take a lead role in ensuring plans are in place to house the homeless in safe and healthy conditions.
This need extends beyond the focus on the extreme cold weather to include hot summer months as well - just as many suffer and even die in the summer months of heat exhaustion and dehydration due to lack of shelter from weather extremes.
Please sign our petition to demand that the City of Toronto act now by providing more shelter beds and more affordable housing for those in need.
