Online Racism - Open Letter to Attorney-General

Online Racism - Open Letter to Attorney-General

In recent weeks and months, the problem of online racism has been growing. Shelley Ware and Kate Seear wrote a letter to the Attorney-General.
We are asking for the Attorney-General to consider reforms, that can be made to policy law and practice to protect people from diverse backgrounds. This is an ongoing problem that generates significant health, social and economic costs.
The letter was emailed to the Attorney-General on the 2nd September 2020, it has 100 signatories of people with different experiences of racism, and from all walks of life.
We have asked the Attorney-General to consider the following:
- Consider implementing a national reponse to racism, in the form of a holistic nation action plan.
- Explore opportunites to improve the reach of Australian anti-discrimination legislation, so as to ensure that the law is keeping up to speed with the rapidly evolving nature of online vilification.
- Consider other reforms that will minimise the possibility of individual Australians evading accountability fro producing and/or disseminating racist content online.
We have other considerations and you can find the full letter here.
