Chris Culliver, a high-profile NFL play for the San Francisco 49ers, today publicly trashed gay people at a Super Bowl media event by expressing homophobic views about the possibility of encountering gay NFL players:
“I don’t do the gay guys man,” said Culliver, whose Niners play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. “I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. “Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah…can’t be…in the locker room man. Nah.” When quizzed by Lange whether any homosexual athletes would need to keep their sexuality a secret in football, Culliver responded: “Yeah, come out 10 years later after that.” (Source)
It should come us no surprise that in today's NFL there is not one single 'out' gay player when this kind of homophobia is the order of the day. And what type of message does this send to young LGBT people in society who hear such discriminatory words? After subsequently encountering a wave of opposition, Culliver's public relations team release an 'apology' which was clearly NOT written by the player himself.
If Chris Culliver is SERIOUS about undoing the tremendous damage he caused today he should participate in an anti-homophobia campaign. I am sure GLAAD and various other organizations could come up with a great role for him to MAKE AMENDS in a way which shows genuine remorse. Chris, like Rosa Parks, we will not be silenced, hidden from society, and told to sit at the back of bus! Will you join with us in work to overcome LGBT discrimination in society?
