Pass S1594/A4044 the Recess Bill

Dear Governor Christie,
We are writing to you on behalf of our children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
We ask that you sign Bill S-1594/A4044. This Bill will assure that all children in kindergarten through 5th grade receive at least 20 minutes of recess per day. This Bill has strong bipartisan support and was unanimously passed by New Jersey’s Senate and Assembly.
Both short and long term studies have proven that children require recess in order to process information, decompress from rigorous study, and to develop social and emotional skills and strategies. Engagement in daily physical activity significantly decreases health risks as well. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Center for Disease Control, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children all purport providing children with this time for healthy growth and development.
We all want our children to succeed in the new global economy, and we recognize the importance of providing a challenging curriculum. However, we believe foregoing opportunities for free play actually diminishes their potential, by denying them the opportunity to learn life skills that cannot be quantitatively measured.
We ask for your consideration in creating this law to assure that all students in New Jersey have the opportunity to truly be children for at least 20 minutes of their school day.
