The Study Commission on the Use of Student Assessments in NJ needs a new leader willing to fairly determine the impact, value, and effectiveness of testing. NJ State Education Commissioner David Hespe, who serves as the head of the Commission, has shown bias in the media and has stubbornly refused to acknowledge the arguments, evidence, and experiences that many parents, teachers, students, administrators, and school board members have presented at the public hearings, through email, and on social media.
On Thursday, February 19, 2015, the third public hearing took place before Commissioner Hespe and other members of the Study Commission. Commissioner Hespe demonstrated a complete lack of respect for the public, whom he was appointed to serve, by announcing a quick 15 minute lunch break and never returning to hear the rest of the public testify. He showed no concern for the time that people took to compose their testimonies and travel to Blackwood to be heard.
Commissioner Hespe never gave a reason for leaving that day and did not release a statement of apology. Instead, three days later he wrote an article that completely ignored the passionate and fact-based testimony against the PARCC test. This behavior is inexcusable.
I am a mother of four young children who is deeply invested in making education work for all students. I have no special interests beyond fighting for what is right for them. I have taught for 12 years at the elementary and middle school levels. My teaching experience spans three states in both low income urban and middle class suburban communities. I have also taught in both charter and public schools.
Though I have been active in the test refusal movement, I will come to the Commission with an open mind. As an English teacher, I am thoroughly prepared to review all of the testimony submitted and compose well-written, balanced representations of that testimony for submission to the media and Governor Christie.
I am currently a stay-at-home mom who is willing and able to takeover the position immediately. Please allow me the opportunity to serve the people of NJ as the new head of the Study Commission.
