Nurses and allied healthcare professionals are subject to violence committed against them on the floors they work and in the parking lots by patients and patient family members. The top three specialties that see the most violence are the ICU, Er, and psychiatric units. The amount of violence has been increasing and it is estimated that as much as 25% of said incidences are not reported.
This means we take violent and potentially violent patients. This puts nursing and healthcare staff and a high risk of being a victim of violence by patients and even there family members. Personally I have seen an increase of said violence come through our doors. Unlike police who can defend themselves, as healthcare staff we have a very limited ability to defend and protect ourselves. At best we can call security, that is if your facility even has security which we do not. I emplore the state of New Hampshire to develop legislation to protect nurses and healthcare workers against this increase in violence against them. States such as NY have similar laws and can serve as a starting point for NH. Sign this petition and let the lawmakers of NH know that such a law must be put into action to protect our nurses and healthcare workers.
