Ban outdoor boilers

Outdoor wood-fired furnaces are usually freestanding units resembling sheds with short smokestacks, located 30 to 200 feet away from a home, business, barn or greenhouse. The boilers burn wood to heat either water or a mixture of water and antifreeze which is piped underground, circulating through heat exchangers, radiant floor tubing or radiators to heat a building.

Although outdoor wood-fired furnaces can be a cheap and efficient way to heat a home; when furnaces are too close to neighbors, smokestacks are not tall enough or trash is burned in them, the pollution can have detrimental effects on neighbors and communities and ultimately our enviornment. Emissions from one outdoor wood-fired boiler are equivalent to the emissions from 205 oil furnaces or as many as 8000 natural gas furnaces.

Short- and long-term exposure to these dangerous particulates can result in increased respiratory and cardiac symptoms, aggravated asthma, decreased lung function, chronic bronchitis, and even premature death for people who have heart and lung diseases. Those who are most susceptible make up more than 50 percent of the general population.Instead of trying to regulate the emissions these unit create, and put restrictions on what is considered acceptable burning materials.

These toxic pollutants not only negatively effect humans, they also have a huge impact of our environments and wildlife. Rain can carry and deposit the Nitrogen in some pollutants on rivers and soils. This will adversely affect the nutrients in the soil and water bodies. This can result in algae growth in lakes and water bodies, and make conditions for other living organism harmful. Chemical reactions involving air pollutants create a poisonous gas ozone (O3). Gas Ozone can affect people’s health and can damage vegetation types and some animal life too.

Its time we ban these outdoor boilers and put an end to their harmful and toxic effects of our enviornment.
