Why this petition matters

Choctaw High School, in Choctaw, Oklahoma, has made the decision to cancel the Class of 2020 graduation ceremony due to COVID-19. This, in theory, is understandable. CNP Administration has the safety of its faculty, students, and parents within it's best of interest. However, in an attempt to replace the commencement ceremony, they plan to host online graduation. While other school districts have pushed their graduation ceremonies back to July and August, CNP Schools have made the conscious decision to follow through with graduation in an incredibly unsatisfying way. THIS is something deeper then graduation. For many in the Class of 2020, it is the last page of a major chapter in life. Many in the Class of 2020 will find incredible difficulty in moving on post-high school due to the lack of a commencement ceremony. A commencement ceremony is designed to signify the start of a new life, a new chapter, and a new dream. The Class of 2020 cannot commence, they cannot start something new without a traditional ceremony. For many in this group, everything has been stripped from them. Senior prom, people that they feel they will never get the opportunity to hug and interact with again. This is all they had left, and now it is gone. No matter what is said, nothing can replace the feeling of walking across that stage and knowing that you accomplished something great. These children need this for closure, please reconsider having Graduation in July/August/September. Parents worked to support their children so they could watch this, and furthermore these CHILDREN worked for this. Give them what they deserve.
