Chipotle Bowl Lids

Chipotle Mexican Grill has taken great strides to maintain an environmentally sustainable business. The company offers recycling stations in more than 300 of its restaurants, uses napkin and salad bowls that are made from 93% recycled newspaper, has LED lighting in stores, and much more. For a business that seems to prioritize the well-being of our planet, why do they use aluminum foil for their lids? Aluminum foil poses many threats to other organisms, the environment, and our health.
Aluminum is a toxic agent to aquatic freshwater organisms that breathe through their gills. Here's why you should care. When you consume these fish, the aluminum can work its way into your system. Studies show that when aluminum enters our body, it can accumulate in the kidneys, lungs, brain, liver, and thyroid, and is linked to diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's as a result.
Don't eat fish? Don't worry. Aluminum can still enter your system through furans, one of the most toxic pollutants to our environment. Furans are released into the atmosphere during the melting process of aluminum and can be harmful to human health, including liver damage, certain types of cancer, skin disorders, neurological problems, and immune system impairment.
Recycling your lids won't work either. Even though Chipotle's lids are made from recycled beverage cans, most of them still end up in a trash can and ultimately a landfill, where they decompose for 200 to 500 years. If you are one of the few people who throw your lid in a recycling bin, it's highly likely that it will still end up in a landfill, considering most recycling centers and public recycling programs do not accept aluminum foil due to food contamination.
The only solution for this issue is to make lids out of the same material used in their bowls - a compostable material made from recycled paper. Whether or not it is the cheapest decision or the easiest decision, using compostable lids is the humane decision. Please sign this petition to support a healthy planet. Our goal is to reach 10,000 signatures!
