The Uighurs one of China’s many Muslim ethnic minorities. Located in the northwestern border of China. It used to be their homeland “East Turkestan” until it was annexed in 1949. In 2017 China started to detain Uighurs in detention camps in order to suppress the Muslim minority. Since then, at least 1 million have been detained ranging from weeks to years according to numerous reports. The Uighurs religious faith has not been favored by the atheistic Chinese communist party. China has built these “re-education” centers to stop the extremist views that are a threat to China. China’s goal to release them back into society after ideological training is not right. They are brought into the camps against their will and are harshly treated by guards. 22 countries mainly European excluding the United States responded to “disturbing reports of large-scale arbitrary detentions of Uighurs” in a July letter to the U.N. While 37 countries defended China saying that there protecting their country from “terrorism, separatism and religious extremism.” The United States has banned imports of goods made in Xinjiang saying that it could be forced labor. Britain had pressed China to allow U.N inspectors to visit Xinjiang. However, Beijing has warned that foreign governments not to interfere. With China denying these claims and barring access to the camps, we need them to own up to their actions and release these people. Sign to help raise awareness for this issue.
