Lady Flightroller started this petition to NYC Parks and Recreation Parks Department

At this moment, there are skaters looking for places to let go and be free. And we know they will need to leave the neighborhood to find these places. But if only there was somewhere local that could bring people of all ages and walks of life together. Somewhere closer to home, somewhere in the Bronx. We are hoping that NYC Parks Department can see the benefits roller skating brings to the community. Since the onset of the pandemic, more New Yorkers have taken to the streets and have worked to create non-traditional skate spaces.

We are asking for your support in convincing Parks Department to work with Skate Info Network (S.I.N.) by allowing skate classes (followed by skate socials) to Teens and Adults in The Bronx during the months of November-April 2023. We know the value Roller Skating adds to communities by fostering a sense of interconnectedness and escapism. It keeps kids off the streets and hard working adults active and healthy. This petition was originally designed for a specific Bronx Recreation Center, however there has been a hard shift since the creation. Our original goal was 200 signatures, and we exceeded that and have over 800.  Why not 1000? Help us get on their official programming so we can push for a happier and healthier Bronx.

Skate instructors TBD but just know it’s the kind of programming we’ve been missing for a long time. Shout out to all Skate Key, Bruckner, Palace, Fordham, Skate Fever, Jerome and Stars Roller Rink skaters. You are not forgotten.

A special note from S.I.N. founder, Chelle Pollard:

Over the years,  I have watched the skating rinks deplete.  I am not seeking a new rink,  but to have the ablity to access community centers in Bronx and potentially other Communities Borough wide, that would allow/support small skate venues. Mainly to have some place where we can have fun and get into health & fitness. Statistically speaking, in my studies on Nutrition, statistics show, Bronx as having the worst health outcome in all the 5 Boroughs. Pretty sad.  And if you start looking deeply into Bronx Communities, you will see Bodegas that are embedded and within walking distance of each other.  In them,  you will never find quality food products,  and to shop with health in mind, residents have to trek to markets well outside of their neighborhood. Added to this, we have nothing much in the way of fun,  or affordable activities that are community driven, and with a holistic focus.

I am an administrator of an online skate community and the stories told on how beneficial roller skating has been and continues to be for most, is nothing short of amazing.  But for now I have to focus on taking baby steps to explore any possibility within my community. There are a number of Bronxites that skate and our concerns presently,  are the limitations presented when we experience inclement weather. We have no place to go,  let alone the inherent safety risk when we dare to venture outside the geographic zones. Not everyone is into gym life to start or maintain fitness goals, nor is everyone eager or so inclined to commute 2 hours to skate in circles for 3 hours. Yes I am a Avid skater, but have limits.

In speaking with others who are passionate about roller skating, we don't know how to best position ourselves to properly advocate to secure a couple of local community centers willing to allow us to skate in the off hours. And we understand it may involve a little co-op type activity to get wheels in motion.

I say,  in order to effect change within your community,  it starts with someone or groups of people taking a stand.  On August 2nd, after having a conversation with a skater, we concluded that to achieve change,  we have to start somewhere.  That somewhere is here.  It is my hope we can get people on board with this and create a ripple effect, and change.  I invite my Sk8Family to join in and support the mission.  Support your Sk8Family. Help make a difference. It's  time to step up.

If you are a skater..and understand this struggle...I invite you to support and create petitions if you are in an impacted community where there were rinks, but no more,  and can attest that there is not much, in the way of activities that are fun and "affordable"
