The state and the police have done nothing to protect couples who choose to love and marry whoever they choose of their own free will. Two recent cases, the case of Hadiya and the murder of Kevin from Kottayam, show that the state has failed in their constitutional responsibility to protect citizens' freedom and dignity. There are 1000s of such couples living in constant fear. Caste, community or wealth should not tear people apart.
As a homestay provider, I was threatened for not checking the marital status of our guests, even though I have ID proof and Address proof documents. It is time to stand up and say enough is enough.
The Chief Minster of Kerala must make a public statement saying the state and the police will protect the constitutional rights of a citizen to choose his or her own partner and live with respect and dignity.
