We, the undersigned, wish to petition the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador to treat the Wedding Industry with the same level of respect and business rationale as most other businesses.

We feel if bars can open, Wedding Venues should be allowed to open while respecting the 50% capacity rule and physical distancing requirements.  Further, we feel that having a reception and small dance, again respecting the capacity rules and physical distancing as much as possible, is warranted under current conditions.

We all know that a wedding has an established guest list which makes any requirement to contact guests a breeze.  In addition, at only 50% capacity most weddings would only be 1-4 bubbles in size.

For a newly married couple, not being able to have their first dance is very stressful.  Considering that the vast majority are already living together we are at a loss to see what the risk is.  For a Bride not to be able to dance with her dad even though they are in the same bubble is a difficult pill to swallow.  The same goes for a groom and his mom.

Engaged couples have invested heavily in terms of personal time and financial resources to plan their big day and feel that they are not being treated fairly.  Having to cancel or reschedule a wedding is stressful.  Additionally, financial penalties and lost deposits add more stress to an already unfair situation.

Employees of Wedding Venues, as well as professional Wedding Vendors, rely on this income to sustain their livelihood, business and way of life.

The wedding industry results in over $100 Million dollars being poured into the provincial economy.  This is based on Stats Canada data over a 5 year period of time and a CBC Report on the actual cost of a wedding.

Some wedding venues and industry professionals are struggling to stay viable during this pandemic and allowing their competition to open creates an unbalanced playing field.  For a wedding venue not being able to operate while seeing a bar open on George Street (or anywhere really) creates an unfair playing field.

Surely an Atlantic Canada wide bubble (as of July 03) and the potential of a Canada wide bubble (as of July 17) presents a higher risk than a wedding of 75-150 guests.

Please be fair is all we ask!
