Chickens in Chillicothe

Chickens in Chillicothe
Why this petition matters
Chillicothe IL residents have been seeking for the right to own chickens on their property within city limits for years. Upon recent evaluation the USDA has released a prediction of egg cost soaring through the roof by the end of 2022. This is just another reason on why we should be allowed to produce our own food. As long as there are the 3 C rules in place; containment, coup size and cleanliness we see no issue with residents investing their own money into egg production on their own property.
As it stands the city of Chillicothe does not allow egg producing chickens within city limits. Many want to change this. We believe with enough people showing interest and the rising popularity of backyard chickens, we may finally be able to change this outdated ordinance.
Backyard birds have the ability to provide farm fresh eggs, educational experiences for the community, insect control, and the compost fertilizer is beneficial for gardens.
Many feel hens can be loud or smell which could potentially be a nuisance for neighbors, but from our research, a flock of 4-6 hens which is what most cities allow for are much more silent than dogs barking. Furthermore, the smell from a small coop is very minimal provided the coop is kept up with. I think we all know that with a change of ordinance would come a strict ordinance on upkeep.
Please consider signing this petition and allowing residents the ability to show you how great owning backyard chickens can be.
