Over the course of years, I, along with a number of other students of color have noticed that our history and social sciences courses omit a great amount of accurate historical information on our different racial/ethnic groups’ beginnings. We’ve seen that the textbook history presented to us often underlines the great tragedies African Americans and other racial minorities have faced simply as cultural differences, promoting an erasure of culture. The majority, if not all, never touch on the lives of our cultural groups before slavery and colonization. People were often taken from advanced civilizations. Taking the action towards integrating various African American/ ethnic courses into all of CPS curriculums is a step that welcomes the celebration of diverse cultural backgrounds. Students of color are more likely to feel safe, supported, and included as well when their history is taught and accurately depicted. In this day and age, our communities are being affected by systematic racism that is brushed over by the American education system. These courses can act as a huge help to encourage the younger generation who are currently fighting for their voices to be heard.  Help us bring this to the attention of the people that are able to push on this change in our public schools; our mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Chicago Public Schools Leadership.
