Christiaan Brodlo started this petition to Chicago Department of Finance

The Chicago Department of Finance is attempting to retroactively collect taxes from car owners who list their vehicle(s) on car-sharing services such as Turo and Getaround. This tax is 9% of our gross income as well as $2.75 per trip. However, we are excluded from the tax breaks that major rental car companies are given! The majors do not have to pay sales tax on the vehicles they purchase, yet Chicago expects the little guy to pay sales tax AND a rental tax. Having to pay this retroactive tax would cost many car owners thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars. This would affect transportation that many of Chicago's residents depend on. For some, car-sharing is their only means to rent a vehicle. There are over 6000 owners and 200,000 renters on Turo in Illinois alone!

Recently, Bill SB2641 was introduced to tax car-sharing like a traditional rental car company. This bill was vetoed. How then are car-sharing owners getting taxed by Chicago when this bill never passed? We are aware that an additional tax on the car-sharing industry is inevitable, but a retroactive tax would be crippling.

Help the car-sharing community continue to offer their much-needed services. We’ve already paid our dues in the form of the sales tax on our vehicles. These unfair tax burdens would stifle the innovative and important car-sharing market. Thank you for your support!
