Alice Green started this petition to Cheshire West And Chester Council

The current plan for the Northgate development is to turn Northgate street into a two way service road in order to account for the extra traffic the development will produce.

This however will be detrimental to the independent businesses that Northgate street is home to. We instead propose that Northgate Street becomes fully pedestrianised.

We strongly object to the council spending tens of millions of pounds of money paid in tax by businesses in Northgate Street and elsewhere to subsidise an environment for large food chains of varying quality, whilst not only failing to give any support whatsoever to the existing restaurant businesses that have grown up so successfully in Northgate Street, but actively designing the new scheme to use Northgate Street as the service access for the new development, preventing those cutting edge businesses from ever being able to set out tables and chairs in the street and severely downgrading their environment.

By signing this petition we are demanding that the council pay attention our needs and protect our livelihoods not just for us, but for the benefit of the citizens of chester who prefer their restaurants to be individual and fresh, rather than yet more branches of chains and for the benefit of tourists, who will not be attracted by a Street of derelict buildings no matter how historic they are.
