At the September 7 SPMS PTA meeting, a concern about the way dress code is enforced was raised.
As a 6th grade girl, it's important to me to be able to dress myself without worrying about what boys will think or whether adults will judge me. During the meeting, adults talked about how dress code exists because they don't want kids to be "distracted" by others' clothing.
This is sexist and I am starting this petition to address this feminist issue.
We demand that the school district change its messaging around dress code so that the focus is not on "distracting" others, since that is sexist.
We would also like the opportunity to discuss a new dress code that is modern and empowers girls.
Thank you for reading.
