On July 1st, 2020, CCSD Superintendent Hightower sent an email to students, parents, and staff regarding Cherokee County’s plans for graduation. As of right now graduation is limited to graduating seniors and staff members who have a role in the event. Despite the threat of COVID-19, masks are not required and the venue is set indoors, factors that could lead to further spread of the virus. As well, a large part of graduation is the company of parents and friends as they see their seniors off to a different stage in their lives, something that will not be possible now. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Georgia, we believe it is best that CCSD rethink their plans for graduation and move to an online platform like Zoom. Many students have already received their diplomas and other graduation items and may feel safer in their homes where they know their chances for contracting COVID-19 are lowered. Also, were CCSD to have online graduation, students could still enjoy the company of their family. Most importantly, we are concerned for our health and the health of our communities. While COVID-19 still looms, we want to do everything in our power to stay safe and to keep others safe. Of course, nobody wants their graduation to be limited or to be online, but taking the necessary measures to keep ourselves safe now will benefit us all in the long run.
