Eric Pedersen started this petition to Chelsea City Council

Mayor Tony Picklesimer and the City Council proposed a one cent sales tax increase for the city as a measure to create additional funding for Chelsea's schools. Adding this tax rate will rise sales taxes an additional 1% for the 2nd time in recent years. 10% will put us higher than 99% of Alabama's localities and make us the only city in Shelby County other than Montevello with a rate as high as 10%. The tax burden as a share of income is highest for low-income households because lower-income households spend a greater share of their income than higher-income households do. If a tax is unavoidable, property tax would be a more fair tax, and property tax is still a deductible. Mayor Picklesimer believes a property tax is unfair as 40% of the students do not live in Chelsea. This is understandable, but do we know how many student families living outside of Chelsea regularly shop in Chelsea? Do we know how many will shop elsewhere due to the increase in taxes? Do we know how this will effect our cities businesses?  If you do not support this tax increase. Please sign this petition.
