High Speed Internet Petition

The residents of Schodack Landing Road in Schodack Landing, New York and surrounding unserved areas strongly request that Charter Spectrum Communications expand their existing network to provide high speed internet service to the aforementioned areas immediately. We further request that a copy of this petition be filed with the corporate office for expedited review and processing.

When the NY Broadband Program was launched by Governor Cuomo in 2015 all New Yorkers were to have access to high speed internet by the end of 2018. We are now almost half of the way through 2020 and we still do not have high-speed internet access in an area that is located only five miles from Interstate 90 and less than 14 miles from the New York State Capitol.

In today’s world, fast, affordable and reliable broadband internet access is crucial to the economic and educational well-being of communities. Internet access is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity, and even more so now during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We find ourselves sheltering in place trying to homeschool our children, work from home and function in general on subpar internet connections putting us further behind than our connected counterparts.

While little to no internet access was a severe inconvenience prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, at a minimum we had access to libraries, schools, community wifi and our workplaces to utilize the internet and complete online activities. We now find ourselves quarantined in our homes with little to no reliable or affordable high speed internet options.  Satellite internet is unreliable, weather dependent, expensive and involves data throttling when limits are met. Cellular hotspots, our other option, are also expensive, involve data caps and are only accessible and reliable where there is a solid cell tower signal. These are inadequate options for families who need reliable high speed internet access to meet their daily living requirements as they pertain to their children’s education, work from home capacity and even access to telehealth in these unprecedented times.

We feel our request for affordable and reliable high speed internet access is reasonable. We disagree with Spectrum’s response that extending the current service past Crocco Lane down to Rt 9J in Schodack Landing, a mere 2.4 miles,  will not generate adequate revenue. There are many residents willing to subscribe to this service as evidenced by the signatures on this petition.
