MOVE AD PRIMA CHARTER SCHOOL (FRANKFORD) TO THOURON AVENUE

We, the undersigned, propose to move Ad Prima – Frankford campus to 8034 Thouron Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19150.  We are supportive of the Ad Prima administration in moving the school.

Reasons to leave Frankford:

  • The Frankford building is very old and does not have the capacity for current Ad Prima students to thrive and focus on academic success.    It is an inferior educational facility and does not meet the needs of current and future Ad Prima children.
  • Infrastructure:  Frankford building does not have the necessary facilities.  It has very small restrooms, no elevator (3 stories), no air conditioning or central heat, gymnasium is shared with cafeteria, kitchen facilities are inadequate, and numerous maintenance issues.  There isn’t space for science labs, computer labs, Spanish classes, music class, art class and space for administrative staff.  There is no space to grow.  No space for school lockers.
  • Access:  The access to Frankford is extremely constricted and no solution is available to resolve this issue.
  • Travel:  The location is a long journey time for a majority of the children.
  • Traffic:  Extremely congested areas with buses and trucks driving along a single lane street.  Accessibility to Frankford Avenue poses many safety risks (kids crossing the street in congested traffic.
  • Security:  Frankford entrance is on a different floor than administrative offices which requires the school to have security during all school hours and still poses as a security risk due to the limited visibility of the front door.  Also, security is required at the school due to external security risks.  A short time ago, the adjacent building was proposing a drug rehab facility.

Reasons to move to Thouron Avenue:

  • Thouron is an updated facility and was completely renovated in 2008 (estimated $3M).  It is move-in ready condition with furniture, white-boards and projectors.  Student capacity can increase at Thouron.
  • Infrastructure:

-Interconnected building of 3 stories with elevator.

         -Central Air/Heat

-Full independent cafeteria with grill, oven, commercial freezer and cash       register.

        -Computer Labs

        -Science Labs

        -Music Class

        -Art Class

        -Spanish Class

        -Administrative Offices

        -Gymnasium

        -Auditorium

         -Lockers (est 300)

         -Each restroom has multiple stalls

  • Access:  Thouron is in a quiet, residential neighborhood and except for when the neighboring school is letting out traffic should be light.
  • Travel:  The journey time will be shorter for a significant number of children. Septa Bus Route 18 stops on corner; the 18 bus connects to Broad Street Subway at Broad and Olney.
  • Traffic:  Except for when the neighboring school is letting out traffic should be light.  The neighboring school operates during different hours than Ad Prima.
  • Security:  Administrative office has direct visibility of entrance and buzzing.

This petition will be delivered to Charter Office and School Reform Commission (SRC).
