Poppy Maynard Smith started this petition to Charnwood Borough Council

Our climate is currently undergoing immense change, and doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Its effects on us and our subsequent generations will be incredibly serious. Irregular weather patterns, huge population displacement and thousands of deaths are among the countless effects that await us if we do not put preventative methods in place- and soon. Even here, in Charnwood, are we beginning to see some of these effects- not even last month, flooding across the borough caused road closures, property damage and even evacuations.

The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predict that we only have 11 years remaining before the worst impacts of global climate change become irreversible! The IPCC also reports that current targets by countries, including the UK, are not enough to keep global average temperature increase under the necessary 1.5C compared to pre-industrial times. We want to see the delicate balance of our climate protected.

The youth of Charnwood are organising this petition because, whilst we cannot vote, climate change is going to have a massive impact on out generation. We want our voices heard: the voices of the future. We believe this petition shows the will of the people to prevent climate change (to the amount that remains possible) by declaring a climate emergency and that consequently our politicians have a duty to act upon it.

We call on Charnwood Borough Council to decalare a climate emergency, and to act upon this by:

- considering the environmental impact of their policies;

- halting any local projects and policies that have a negative impact on the local or global environment;

- supporting any policies and projects that help us to achieve net-zero carbon emissions as soon as possible.
